About this provider

SOAR offers high adventure summer camps designed specifically for youth and young adults between the ages of 8 and 25 diagnosed with ADHD and LD. Each of our summer camp programs promotes friendships, increase self-confidence, and develop life skills. Created in 1977 by an adult with learning disabilities, SOAR provides fun and successful experiences so that participants may gain greater awareness of their own strengths and improve self-esteem and confidence.
Our camps offer adventure activities, for beginners and beyond, located across the country’s most scenic places. These incredible locations include the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, the sunny Florida Keys, wild and wonderful Wyoming, the California Coast, and the Adirondacks region of New York. Campers participate in exciting adventure activities such as rock climbing, horseback riding, SCUBA diving, llama treks, whitewater rafting, surfing, and much more!
SOAR staff and instructors provide a community where campers are celebrated for their gifts, where they come to make friends, and where they have the freedom to be themselves. Everything we do at SOAR is based upon helping campers experience success and providing them with the tools and strategies to continue building upon that success. Campers will develop self-confidence, life skills, and build friendships while experiencing a variety of exciting adventures.
We are proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association.

We offer a Postgraduate Adventure for young adults, ages 18 to 25, which focuses on developing life skills critical to the transition into adulthood. This includes budgeting, cooking, expedition planning, life skills, and more. Students will begin at our Balsam Base and then travel to the Pisgah National forest and Outerbanks for exciting adventures.

Our private school, The Academy at SOAR provides academic credit opportunities for youth who benefit from individualized instruction and curriculum combine with adventure based learning. Based out of our Balsam Outdoor Learning center, the Academy is a one of a kind program that focuses on developing the whole child through academics, adventure, empowerment, life skills instruction, project based learning, field studies, advocation and community.

Amazing experience

Soar has been a blessing for our son! This is the second year we are sending him there last year was the llama trek in the Smokey mountains for 12 days and when he came back he said he wanted to go longer further so he did Wyoming for a 3 week horsepacking this summer and loved every minute of it! Next year he said he wanted to do two courses he clearly can’t get enough. He always comes back more grown up more aware of his surroundings more organized and more compliant and super happy more importantly! Like I said I cannot thank the staff enough for their patience with our little guy and teaching him how to work better with his peers and control his impulses. Thank you Soar!!

Excellent program

Our 12-year old daughter attended the NC canoe camp this past summer and loved it. She came home with new friends, life skills and coping mechanisms. The program very intentionally focuses empowering and appreciating each camper. As a result, I can see the emotional growth in my daughter.

Amazing Camp

My 11 year old attended the 18 day Wyoming camp in 2014. It was a profound experience for her. She did not want to leave and still misses Wyoming and the camp. Lasting changes occurred with her experience including maturity level and a bit more flexible in terms of thinking. The counselors took great care of her in many ways, including her fear of heights, and we feel so thankful she has had this experience. We are planning on her returning. I highly recommend SOAR.

Awesome Experience!

SOAR celebrates the strengths in each participant and helps them grow in many areas. Our son will be attending again next summer, for the third time. It's an awesome program with a wonderful staff led by a tremendous leader, Big John.
